The new RM 27-02 is a sporty tourbillon watch designed by RICHARD MILLE for tennis player Rafael Nadal, featuring an ultra-light case and superb stability to withstand the tremendous acceleration of the stroke – the same watch worn by South African Wayde van Niekerk to win the gold medal in the men’s 400 metres sprint final at the Rio Olympics. The watch was worn by South African Wayde van Niekerk in the final of the men’s 400 metres sprint at the Olympic Games, when he crossed the finish line to win the gold medal.
Inspired by the chassis of a racing car, RICHARD MILLE has “integrated” the skeletonised mainplate of the movement with the case, thus significantly increasing its resistance to impact. To make the watch even lighter, Richard Mille also worked with North Thin Ply Technology to develop an ultra-lightweight material called “quartz fibre”, which is hard and wear-resistant, to make the case, which weighs as much as a piece of paper and has a rugged Damascus steel-like texture.
The structure of the movement is clearly visible through the crystal, with a floating tourbillon at 6 o’clock and a fast-rotating barrel at 12 o’clock, exclusive to Richard Mille, which provides a power reserve of up to 52 hours and increases the efficiency of the kinetic energy by 20 per cent when the watch is first wound.
The white bezel, which is secured to the case by 12 grade 5 titanium screws, is complemented by an orange-coloured strap and a red crown, and the ends of the hour and minute hands are also highlighted in bright orange-yellow in order to improve reading legibility.
