The new RM 27-02 is a sporty tourbillon watch designed by RICHARD MILLE for tennis player Rafael Nadal, featuring not only an ultra-light case, but also superb stability to withstand the tremendous acceleration of the ball at the moment of striking – the same watch worn by South African Wayde van Niekerk to win the gold medal in the men’s 400 meter sprint final at the Rio Olympics. Inspired by the chassis of a racing car, RICHARD MILLE has “integrated” the skeletonized mainplate of the movement with the case, thus significantly increasing its resistance to impact. To make the watch even lighter, Richard Mille also worked with North Thin Ply Technology to develop an ultra-lightweight material called “quartz fiber”, which is hard-wearing and resistant to wear, for the case, which weighs as much as a piece of paper and has a rugged Damascus steel-like texture.
The structure of the movement is clearly visible through the crystal, with a floating tourbillon at 6 o’clock and a Richard Mille-exclusive fast-rotating barrel at 12 o’clock, providing a power reserve of up to 52 hours and increasing the efficiency of the kinetic energy by 20% at the very beginning of winding.
The white bezel, secured to the case by 12 grade 5 titanium screws, is complemented by an orange strap and a red crown, and the ends of the hour and minute hands are also highlighted in bright orange for improved reading legibility.
